A Journey into Overlanding Power Solutions: My Experience and Setup

When I first embarked on my overlanding adventures, I had a lot to learn about powering my equipment on the go. Like many, I assumed that popular portable power stations like Jackery or Ecoflow batteries would suffice. While these products are indeed impressive, I quickly discovered that they have their limitations, particularly when it comes to charging speed during driving or via solar panels.

The challenge: Charging on the go

One of the biggest challenges I faced was the slow charging times of these power stations. Even with solar panels, it often felt like an eternity to get a full charge. This led me to explore alternatives that could provide a more efficient and reliable power source for my overlanding needs.

Exploring alternative: DC to DC Charging

My research led me to Tinkerer Adventures on YouTube link here, where I learned about the benefits of using a DC-to-DC charger and integrating it to my Eco Flow. This device allows for faster and more efficient charging directly to the battery from my cigarette lighter. As this would not be sufficient for me for the long term, I went into looking for other options with an onboard battery. I wanted to charge from the vehicle’s alternator while driving. However, with limited funds, I couldn’t immediately invest in a high-end lithium battery system, which is often recommended for such setups.

Choosing an affordable solution: AGM battery and battery box

After much consideration, I decided to go with an AGM deep cycle battery and a battery box from KickAss. This setup not only fit my budget but also offered the flexibility to upgrade to a lithium battery in the future if needed. While I’m aware that lead-acid batteries like AGM don’t offer the same 100% output efficiency as lithium batteries, the cost savings were significant. My entire setup, including the battery, cost around $800, compared to $1600 or more for a lithium-based system. I’m also not the best at installing and wiring electrical so their all-in-one plug and play works best for me.

Benefits of the AGM battery system

  1. Cost-Effective: The AGM battery system was half the price of a comparable lithium setup.

  2. Quicker Charging: Using my vehicle’s alternator, I can fully charge the battery within an hour of driving, which is much faster than recharging a portable power station.

  3. Built-In System: Having a built-in power system in my vehicle is a game-changer. It provides reliable power for my Iceco fridge, diesel heater, and other essential gear.

Enhancing my set up with Ecoflow

While my AGM battery system handles most of my power needs, I still carry an EcoFlow portable power station. This serves as a convenient power source in my tent, allowing me to charge phones and other small devices. It’s a versatile addition that complements my main setup.

The overlanding lifestyle: Power on the move

Unlike some overlanders who set up camp for a weekend at a single location, I typically move daily. This means I need a reliable power source to keep my gear running as I travel. From charging my Iceco fridge to keeping my diesel heater operational on cold nights, my power needs are diverse and constant.

Being able to work remotely while overlanding adds another layer of complexity. I need to charge camera batteries, laptops, and even a Starlink satellite system to stay connected and upload videos for my YouTube channel. My current power setup allows me to manage all these tasks efficiently while enjoying the great outdoors.

This is the power system that works for me, balancing cost, efficiency, and future-proofing. I’d love to hear about your setups and what solutions you’ve found effective in your overlanding journeys. Feel free to share your experiences and tips!

Finding the right power solution for overlanding is a journey in itself. With the right research and a bit of experimentation, you can create a system that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a weekend camper or a full-time overlander, having a reliable power source is essential to fully enjoy your adventures.
